Does light rail work for Wellington?

Light rail is being promoted enthusiastically by a lot of people as a way to solve Wellington’s transport problems. But is a light rail system from the train station to Island Bay really the best answer?

For our November ‘First Thursday’ talk, we will hear from Brent Efford of the Light Rail Transit Association and Demetrius Christoforou of Trams Action.

Their concerns is that the current mass rapid transit proposals from Let's Get Wellington Moving will not encourage enough people out of cars and are missing an opportunity to provide an effective world-class transit system for Wellington that connects to existing rail.  Given the vast amount of money that will be spent on this mass rapid transit proposal, not to mention the huge disruption, it's important that it delivers the best results possible, and that Wellingtonians are aware of all the issues.  This promises to be a very interesting session and there will be time for discussion.
